Located at the Avenida del Puerto, Old Havana, it was the first city promenade. Finished in 1776 and built by Antonio Fernández Trevejo, following orders of the General Captain Don Felipe Pons de la Viela, Marqués de La Torre, who is considered by many the first Havana urban planner. It was named Paula for its proximity to the old San Francisco de Paula Hospital. Since the beginning it becomes a real social and cultural spot of Havana city.
It was made of an earth walkway in the middle of two poplar tree lines with stone seat banks. During 19th century this long walkway was the meeting spot of all refined Havana and for a long time the reference place of the whole city.
In year 2000 this walkway was enlarged to reach the Paula Church, which is nowadays a Concert Hall for Ancient and Baroque music.
